Admission Accomplished – Crafting the College Application
Ivy Bound invites you to take part in our “Admission Accomplished” college application camp. During these 13 sessions, students work on their Common Application essay, their résumé, their extra essays, and their recommendation-gathering.
We meet three days a week. Students hear a “good practices” talk at the outset before digging in individually. The coaches view each student’s work at each stage and offer feedback on what changes should be made. For work that is incomplete, the students share it via email for their coach’s overnight evaluation. By the next session, the student is ready to finish the last piece and start on the next.
Session one is about good topics for the common app essay, where the résumé and recommendations fit in, and how to research colleges. We begin brainstorming in this session. In the remaining sessions, coaches spend one-on-one time with students. Session one runs for two hours.
The other twelve sessions are about crafting, editing and finalizing. Whether for a résumé, an additional essay, or the Common App essay, students are taught that every word counts. We recommend parents attend our first session and are welcome to attend other sessions as well. These run for 90 minutes.
This course entitles each student to three hours of extra time with a coach. These get scheduled after the first week, typically one hour a week over the three succeeding weeks, but a tighter schedule or a more spread schedule is allowed. Some of those three hours may be directed at brainstorming topics, researching college programs, and selecting colleges. Additionally, we help to create rolling, early, and regular decision plans for college applications.
Our twenty class hours together are a rigid base that assures students get most of their work completed during our sessions, but some outside time is expected. Students should plan to do some work after every session.
Ivy Bound’s Coaches
Ivy Bound’s leaders are skilled teachers of grammar and expression. They help students find their voice and do so with clarity and passion. Our coaches know what colleges are looking for and help to avoid red flag issues on essays and applications. We enlist one coach for every three to five students, so everyone gets individual attention
Those who wish to enlist the coach in extra sessions can do so using a regularly scheduled time. The first three hours are at no extra charge. Extra time with a coach is paid for in advance and hourly rates depend on the selected coach.
Our coaches are prompters and evaluators. They make suggestions for essays, but expect the student to create their own content. Ivy Bound coaches will edit all writing assignments, but will not write for students.
We offer nine schedules, but highly recommend the August sessions. Finishing early has no downside. It can be an admissions advantage and an early completion is always an emotional relief. All times below are in EST.
