College Admissions Counseling
Our Approach
Each learner is different, and our college counselors & academic advisors will work together to craft a plan that fits your needs and goals.
-
This lets the counselor know the student and, to some extent, enables the student to know themselves as it pertains to what admissions officers seek. Brainstorming is typically a two-hour session done with a counselor, student, and one or both parents. This session aims to create two essay topics that align recommenders.
-
For students who already have a good resume, counselors will work with the student to design a resume that appeals to college readers. It may be a start-from-scratch effort for students who lack a good resume.
-
This is for the Common App essay and at least one alternative essay. Ivy Bound's Counselors know themes that work and are particularly good at keeping the student away from expressions that DON'T work or are downright dangerous for an officer to read. We will not compose whole paragraphs for a student, but we will offer phrases and complete sentences that, if a student can put into their own voice, can be used. The process of Resume Crafting and Essay Writing is a back-and-forth exchange between counselor and student.
-
As college admissions officers want applicants who "know us well,” we implore students to research beyond the ‘catalogs.’ This allows the student to stand out beyond the GPA and SAT/ACT numbers. Some students are self-directed here and need minimal research help from a Counselor. Others rely on a counselor much more. Our typical goal is to show them HOW to research and what's important so they can carry this on independently. We do this so that research substitutes for time-consuming college visits.
-
While we can't write recommendations for the student, we can steer the student to good recommenders and give these recommenders appealing phrases to include in their recommendation.
-
Most families develop lists themselves and decide for themselves among ED, EA, and Regular decision college applications. We can do this if desired, but our interactions in Brainstorming, Resume Writing, and Essay Crafting usually yield a "list" organically. When a student or parent brings up a new appealing university, we may also suggest, "If you like ____ , consider ____ college as well."
-
-
For a family starting early, there are more options. Extracurricular "stand-out" activities have risen in importance to colleges. So, this is becoming important for students to have on their application.
What can a counselor do for you?
We offer tailored advice on college research, helping students stand out by understanding what admissions officers seek beyond grades and test scores. For families starting early, we assist with curriculum planning and extracurricular choices to build a strong academic and personal profile. By providing support at every stage, Ivy Bound counselors empower students to maximize their potential and increase their chances of admission to their dream schools.

Essay topic brainstorming, essay crafting, and essay burnishing/editing. Resume crafting.Dealing with a negative.Personalized recommendations (one shoe does not fit all). Application logistics. Brainstorming for a Senior just getting started generally is a two-hour session, with the consultant, student, and at least one parent working together on the essays
-
It all begins with an idea. Maybe you want to launch a business. Maybe you want to turn a hobby into something more.
-
All the above and "Extra Dimension" counseling are available. This is looking for opportunities that let the student stand out. Meetings are typically brief except for the one or two "brainstorming" sessions outside of meeting time; consultants will work on the student's behalf to prepare the student for the next steps. Brainstorming for a Junior-Freshman is 1 hour to 1.5 hours with a parent involved. The consultants will discuss college desires. From there, the consultant will recommend and help cultivate some extra extracurricular and summer activities to help realize those desires.
